Sinchon (신촌) is one stop from Hongik Univ. Station on Line 2. Ewha Womans Univ. (이대) is two. Walking takes 15 to 20 minutes. Almost no visitor goes.
There are good reasons for that, and good reasons against it. This covers both.
Why are older guides to Sinchon and Ewha wrong?
Because they describe a shopping district that has since hollowed out — and because Google Maps cannot walk you around it. Two separate problems stack up here, and they compound each other.
Old guides are wrong. Anything written about Sinchon and especially the Ewha shopping street before about 2020 describes a district that has since hollowed out. The fashion strip that drew busloads of foreign shoppers is largely gone. If you arrive expecting the Ewha of the travel blogs, you will spend an afternoon walking past 임대 (for lease) signs.
Google Maps does not do walking directions in Korea. High-precision mapping data is restricted from export to overseas servers, so Google’s Korean coverage is thin and it will not route you on foot. Install Naver Map (네이버 지도). It has an English setting, navigates to the subway exit number, and — critically here — distinguishes between the two entirely different stations both named Sinchon.

What shape is the district, actually?
There are only three axes. Learn them and you cannot get lost.

Then there is the part visitors never reach: the alley grid west of Yonsei-ro (Yonsei-ro 5-gil through 11-gil, in Changcheon-dong 창천동). Tourists walk Yonsei-ro and Myeongmul-gil and leave. Yonsei students eat and drink in the grid behind them. Individual alleys have student nicknames — a run of fried-chicken shops known as Chicken Alley (Yonsei-ro 11-gil), a lane named after an old grilled-pork place (Yonsei-ro 7-angil).
Sinchon and Ewha are adjacent but separate. The boundary is around the Gyeongui Line underpass; administratively Sinchon sits in Changcheon-dong and Ewha in Daehyeon-dong. A small ridge between them stopped a continuous commercial strip from forming, which is why two neighbourhoods a 15-minute walk apart feel nothing alike.
Why did the Ewha shopping street empty out?
It ran on foreign tourist retail, and when that flow stopped there was nothing underneath it. This is the part no promotional guide will tell you, and it is the reason to read this rather than a 2015 blog post.
Small-unit retail vacancy across Sinchon and Ewha was 15.1% in Q3 2025 and stayed there through Q1 2026 — roughly three times the Seoul average. In Q4 2023 it hit 18.3% against a citywide figure of 5.8%. Reported turnover in the Sinchon commercial district peaked in 2023 and fell in both 2024 and 2025.
It was not one cause.
- Ewha was a tourist retail strip, not a local one. Japanese women shoppers in the early 2000s, then Chinese visitors, kept the clothing, shoe and cosmetics shops alive. In 2014 a shoe shop by the Ewha main gate was quoted saying Chinese customers accounted for around 80% of sales. When that flow stopped, the street had nothing underneath it.
- Hongdae absorbed the nightlife. In the early 2000s Hongdae was where you went to escape crowded, expensive Sinchon. Then the Airport Railroad and Gyeongui-Jungang Line opened, Gyeongui Line Forest Park opened, busking and club culture concentrated there — and Hongdae passed Sinchon in both footfall and prices.
- Rents did not fall. Korean coverage of the district returns repeatedly to landlords holding asking rents even with units standing empty.
- Zoning worked against recovery. The Ewha street was designated a fashion-and-beauty specialisation zone, which analysts have argued kept other business types from moving in.
- The student population is shrinking. That is a structural problem for every university district in Korea.
What this means for you. Ewha is not a shopping destination. What it is instead is cheap, uncrowded and priced for students — a quiet neighbourhood two stops from one of Seoul’s most congested ones. That is the reason to go.
What it is good at now, and what it is not
Good at
- Cheap, generous student food. Grilled fish, stir-fried squid, stews, rice-and-side-dish sets — a proper meal lands around ₩10,000. The same plate in Hongdae costs more.
- Drinking streets without the crush. The alleys west of Yonsei-ro are far emptier than Hongdae on a Saturday night. If queueing is what you hate, this is the fix.
- Two campuses you can walk for free. Both Yonsei and Ewha are open to the public during the day.
- Bookshops and study cafés. University-district survivors.
Not good at
- Shopping. The Ewha fashion street is not what the photos show.
- Late-night scale. Things go quiet noticeably earlier than in Hongdae. For 2 AM food, go back to Hongdae.
- Anything needing a crowd. If atmosphere-by-density is the point, this is the wrong choice — and these days that is true in term time too.

Why are there two stations called Sinchon?
One is Line 2, one is the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, and they are ten minutes apart on foot. This strands more visitors than anything else here.

They are about ten minutes apart on foot. If you type only “Sinchon Station” into an app you may be sent to the wrong one. If your destination is Yonsei-ro or Yonsei University, you want the Line 2 station — which is true about 99% of the time.
Worth five minutes while you are there: the old Sinchon Station building (구 신촌역사) still stands beside the train station. A single-storey brick station house built in 1920, it is National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 136. It was nearly demolished when the modern station block went up, was relocated and restored instead, and opened to the public after tidying work in 2012.
Is Yonsei-ro still closed to cars?
No — the transit-only designation was removed on 1 January 2025, except on Sundays.
Older guides say Yonsei-ro is a transit-only street closed to taxis and private cars. That is no longer true.
Seoul announced the removal of the Yonsei-ro transit-only designation in December 2024, and it took effect on 1 January 2025 — eleven years after the 2014 designation. Taxis and private cars are allowed through.
Sundays are the exception. Seodaemun-gu runs Yonsei-ro as a car-free street every Sunday. Do not plan on a taxi dropping you partway up the street on a Sunday.
And one weekend a year the street becomes something else entirely: the Sinchon Water Gun Festival, branded the Seoul Vacance Festival, takes over Yonsei-ro in early August — 8 and 9 August in 2026 — with road closures and bus detours in place. Great if that is what you came for; avoid that weekend otherwise.

Campus canteen access policy is set by each university and can change, and some close over vacation. Walk in; if it is members-only that day, walk out.

Drinking
Sinchon’s nightlife is better understood by alley than by shop name. Individual bars turn over fast; the character of each lane does not.
- The grid west of Yonsei-ro (Yonsei-ro 5-gil to 11-gil). Where Yonsei students actually go. Chicken shops, grill houses and hof bars fill a checkerboard of lanes. Almost no tourists.
- Yonsei-ro 7-angil. No direct opening onto Yonsei-ro, so the shops here compete on value rather than footfall.
- Myeongmul-gil. The diagonal from the train station to the department store; chains mixed with bars.
Walking into somewhere with the lights on beats searching. Naming a bar I cannot confirm is still open would be worse than naming the street.

How to behave at the ECC. It is a library and teaching building, not an attraction. As tourist numbers rose, notices asking visitors to refrain from entering appeared at the ECC gates. The sunken outdoor valley and stairs are yours to look at; the reading rooms and the students in them are not photo subjects. Both campuses also restrict outside visitors late at night.
Is Sinchon empty during university vacation?
Yes — roughly late June to August and late December to February. Shops that live on student trade cut hours or close outright.

The honest footnote: term time is not what it was either. Korean press coverage now runs an annual story about the disappearance of the new-semester rush. So the accurate version is not “quiet because it is vacation” but “quiet anyway, quieter in vacation.”
If you came for calm, that is a feature.
Apps, maps and money
- Naver Map, not Google Maps — see the top of this article. It also tells the two Sinchon stations apart, which Google will not do for you reliably.
- The waitlist apps barely matter here. Korean restaurant queues run on Catch Table (캐치테이블) and Tabling (테이블링), and Tabling requires Korean identity verification to register, which effectively locks out visitors. Catch Table now has an English app with email sign-up, but it covers fewer venues than the Korean one. In Sinchon you rarely need either, because there is rarely a queue. Where there is one, the tablet at the shop door is the realistic route.
- Carry some cash. A few of the older places are cash-only. Card is normal everywhere else.
Can you visit Sinchon with a suitcase?
You can, but do not — store it at Hongik Univ. Station and ride Line 2 one stop.
Sinchon and Ewha are a day trip from a Hongdae base, not somewhere to arrive with luggage. The alleys are narrow, the rooms are small, and the whole Ewha side is uphill — the walk from the station to the ECC climbs the entire way.
There is one correct order: store first, ride Line 2, walk empty-handed.

Work backwards from the deadline. Dinner in Sinchon plus one round of drinks reaches 22:00 faster than you think. If you have an evening planned, use a 24-hour self-service option from the start.

If you do one thing: walk Baekyang-ro on a weekday, then eat a set meal in the alleys. That is the whole neighbourhood in ninety minutes.

- Sinchon is one stop from Hongdae, Ewha is two. Fifteen to twenty minutes on foot.
- The Ewha shopping street is empty. Vacancy runs about three times the Seoul average. Do not come to shop.
- What replaced it is cheap, calm and student-priced. That is the reason to come.
- Two different stations are called Sinchon. Do not mix them up.
- Yonsei-ro has allowed cars since January 2025 — except Sundays, when it is car-free.
- Store your bag at Hongik Univ. Station and take Line 2.
