Search “Hongdae café” and you get the same photograph over and over: big window, white wall, cream on top of a latte. The problem is that this list barely overlaps with where locals actually sit.
Hongdae is not one café district. It is four adjoining ones, and each has a different crowd, a different price per cup, and a different expected length of stay. Individual shops open and close constantly. The structure does not — and once you can read the structure, you can judge a café you have never heard of from the pavement outside.
Does Google Maps work for finding cafés in Korea?
Search works; walking directions and opening hours often do not — use Naver Map. Everything below depends on it. Google Maps does not do reliable walking or transit directions in Korea. Korea restricts the export of high-precision mapping data under its spatial data law, and because Google processes map data on servers outside the country, it cannot use the domestic-grade data that Naver and Kakao use.
In February 2026 the government conditionally approved Google’s export request for the first time in 19 years, but as of September 2026 the thing that actually works for a traveller is still Naver Map (or KakaoMap). Opening hours, holiday closures, and whether a place has shut down are all far more accurate there. The reliable move: copy the Korean shop name and paste it into Naver Map.
That is why every café below is listed with its Korean name.

How to read a café from the street
The shopfront tells you most of what happens inside.
- Photo wall at the entrance, English menu board on the pavement, big backlit sign → built for tourist turnover. Expect loud music and a good chance of a time limit.
- A roaster drum visible, 200g bean bags on a retail shelf, a printed origin list → coffee-first. Quieter, more expensive per cup, and nobody will rush you.
- Almost no sign, just a number on the door, or a second floor above a shop → a neighbourhood café running on regulars. One drink per person is assumed; often card-only.
- A waiting tablet on a stand outside → a dessert destination. Budget 30–60 minutes of queue on a weekend.
Can you work in a Hongdae café?
Usually yes. Studying and working in cafés is common enough in Korea to have its own word — 카공 (kagong), and 카공족 for the people who do it. But there are conditions foreigners routinely miss.
- 1인 1음료 (one drink per person). If that sign is on the door, everyone occupying a seat orders something. Sitting with water while a friend drinks is not acceptable.
- No-study zones. A growing number of cafés ban laptops and books outright. If the notice is up, there is no negotiating it.
- Time limits. Cafés that need seat turnover post 90- or 120-minute caps. At busy times, the baseline manner is to order another drink every two to three hours.
- Outlets. The most common way a Korean café discourages long stays is simply switching off or covering the outlets. Seeing a socket on the wall does not mean you may use it. Carry a power bank.
- Seat zoning. Some cafés split “laptop seats” from “conversation seats.” Follow the labels.
Do you order before you sit down in a Korean café?
Yes — order first, sit second. Taking a table before you have ordered reads as not having ordered at all.

- Kiosks. Touchscreen ordering is standard in larger cafés. Most have an English screen; small independent kiosks sometimes do not.

- No tipping. There is no tipping culture in Korean cafés and no service charge on the bill.
What time do Hongdae cafés open?
Many Hongdae back-alley cafés do not open until 11:00 or 12:00. This is a nightlife neighbourhood; the mornings start late. If you want coffee at 09:00, go to a large café or chain immediately by the station.
Evenings run long, though: 22:00–23:00 closing is standard, and a few places run 24 hours.
When coffee is the point: the roasteries

앤트러사이트 커피 로스터스 Anthracite Coffee Roasters — Hapjeong / Danginri
A former shoe factory next to the old Dangin-ri power plant, taken over in 2010 and left largely as found — unpainted exterior, one small sign, factory bones intact inside. Roasts its own beans; known above all for drip. This is the anchor of the Hongdae roastery belt.
- Far from Hongik Univ. Station. Walk from Sangsu Station instead (about 10 min). From Hongik Univ. Exit 8 or 9, roughly 20 minutes.
- Price band: drip and filter ₩7,000–10,000
- Suits: people building a day around coffee, and anyone who cares more about the room than the photo
커피리브레 Coffee Libre — Yeonnam-dong
A first-generation Korean specialty roaster that started in a Yeonnam back alley in 2009. Its founder was Korea’s first certified Q-grader, and the company buys green coffee by direct trade. The room is compact, with the retail bean shelf and hand-drip still at the centre of it.
- Exit 3, about 7–9 minutes
- Price band: drip ₩6,000–9,000; retail beans separate
- Suits: anyone taking beans home, or curious where Korean specialty coffee started
히트커피로스터스 서교 Hit Coffee Roasters — Seogyo-dong
Tucked into a quiet Seogyo alley between Hongik Univ. and Hapjeong stations. Roasts in-house, sells beans at the counter, wood-toned inside with an outdoor terrace, and runs a wide drip lineup.
- Exit 8 or 9, about 10–12 minutes
- Price band: drip ₩6,000–9,000
- Suits: escaping main-strip noise without committing to the walk down to Sangsu
빈브라더스 커피하우스 Bean Brothers Coffee House — Sangsu, Tojeong-ro
Started in 2013 as an online coffee subscription, opened its first café in Hapjeong in 2014. The Coffee House branch, on riverside Tojeong-ro, runs a seasonal coffee bar.
- Sangsu Station Exit 3, about 6 minutes. From Hongik Univ. Exit 9, roughly 15–18 minutes
- Price band: espresso drinks ₩5,000–7,000; filter ₩7,000–10,000
- Suits: people who want to choose across a lineup rather than order “a coffee”
Which Hongdae cafés can you sit in for hours?
The multi-floor and view-facing ones — Cafe Comma, TYPE COFFEE, Cafe Gabiae. All three have the seat count to absorb a long stay without you taking a table someone is waiting for.
카페꼼마 합정점 Cafe Comma — Hapjeong
A book café run by the publisher Munhakdongne 문학동네, spread over multiple floors from the basement up. Lots of seats, and it gets quieter the higher you climb. Walls of books mean nobody blinks at an open laptop.
- Easiest from Hapjeong Station. From Hongik Univ. Exit 8 or 9, about 15 minutes
- Price band: americano ₩5,000–6,000
- Suits: a two-to-three-hour session, or a rainy afternoon
TYPE COFFEE 한강점 — Sangsu, Tojeong-ro
Regularly cited as a work café for its Han River outlook and calm interior. Hand drip and scones. On publicly listed menus as of September 2026, drip coffee runs about ₩8,500 and a latte about ₩7,000.
- Sangsu Station Exit 3, about 7 minutes. From Hongik Univ. Exit 9, roughly 18 minutes
- Window seats are contested at peak hours
- Suits: a long quiet sit you do not want to trade the view for
카페 가비애 Cafe Gabiae — Hongdae, 24 hours
A 24-hour, year-round café near Hongik Univ. Station, on two floors. It is publicly noted as suggesting roughly one drink per four hours, which is looser than the usual two-hour convention. Nobody comes here for the interior. It exists for when nothing else is open.
- Exit 6, about 400m — roughly a 6–8 minute walk
- Price band: americano ₩4,000–5,000
- Suits: waiting out a night bus, a dawn arrival, a jet-lag failure
When dessert is the point
카페 레이어드 연남점 Cafe Layered — Yeonnam-dong
A bakery café known for scones and cakes: brick exterior, European-styled interior, two floors plus terrace seating. One drink per person is stated, and it fills up on weekends — this is one of the places where you queue.

- Suits: dessert and photos; on a weekend, arrive at opening
테일러커피 연남점 Tailor Coffee — Yeonnam-dong
Known for signature drinks topped with house-made cream. The Yeonnam first branch sits on Seongmisan-ro 성미산로, and the brand has since spread to several locations around Seoul.
- Exit 3, about 7 minutes
- Price band: signature drinks ₩6,000–8,000
- Suits: people who want a drink as a treat rather than a coffee to assess
Early and late
- 블루보틀 홍대 Blue Bottle Hongdae — ground floor of the RYSE hotel. Opens earlier than most cafés in the area, with seating built along the staircase and a wide ground-floor room. About 2–3 minutes from Exit 8 or 9. Americano from around ₩6,000. One of the few places you can count on before the neighbourhood wakes up.
- 퍼스트커피랩 홍대 First Coffee Lab — Donggyo-dong, off Sinchon-ro 4-gil. Published opening times differ by source between 08:00 and 09:00, but either way it is early by Hongdae standards. About 5 minutes from Exit 1. Confirm the exact hour on Naver Map before you go.

Can you bring a suitcase into a Hongdae café?
In most of them, no. Only the multi-floor rooms really absorb one, and even then not on a weekend afternoon.
Most Hongdae cafés are small. Anything over 20 inches blocks the aisle and the next table cannot get past. The ones that genuinely absorb a suitcase are the multi-floor rooms.
카페 공명 홍대점 Cafe Gongmyung — Seogyo-dong, Wausan-ro
A converted old house in red brick, reported at around 250 pyeong across a ground-floor terrace, a second-floor hall, and a third-floor rooftop. One of the higher seat counts in the immediate Hongdae area.
- Exit 9, about 8 minutes
- Price band: drinks ₩5,000–8,000; bakery separate
- Suits: a group, or one bag you could not offload
Others that can cope with a case: Cafe Comma Hapjeong (floors to spread across), Anthracite (factory ceilings, wide circulation), Blue Bottle Hongdae (broad ground floor). All three still tighten up on a weekend afternoon.
Store it first anyway
Even if you win the aisle battle in one café, the next one presents the same problem. If you plan to visit more than one café in Hongdae, dealing with the bag at the station first is simply faster.
Work backwards from the deadlines, too — sitting in a café past a counter’s closing time means not getting your bag back. (Checked on site 2026-06-29.)

- Main-strip cafés are built for turnover. To sit for a while, walk down to Sangsu or into the Seogyo back alleys.
- Coffee → Sangsu and Danginri. Dessert → Yeonnam.
- Read the sign at the door first. One drink per person, no-study zone, and time limits are all posted there.
- Before 11:00, do not expect the alley cafés to be open.
- Check on Naver Map before you walk. Google’s opening hours are frequently wrong.
