Hongdae After Midnight: What's Open and How You Get Home

For daytime eating in Hongdae, that is a separate article → Where locals actually eat in Hongdae · Cafés locals sit in

This is the other half of the day. Hongdae is one of the very few districts in Seoul where late-night eating is an actual industry. Soup shops list 24-hour hours. Pojangmacha take last orders at 05:00. A kebab shop runs year-round without closing.

So the wall a visitor hits at midnight is not “is anything open.” It is “can I still get back to where I am sleeping” and “can I still get my suitcase.” The second one closes at 22:00, before the first one does. This article is built around those two deadlines.

Does Google Maps show the right opening hours in Korea?

No — and at midnight that is expensive. Use Naver Map or Kakao Map instead.

Google Maps does not do walking directions or business hours properly in Korea. Korea restricts the export of high-precision map data, so Google cannot use the domestic dataset. Late at night that failure gets expensive: you walk twenty minutes to a shop that closed at 21:00.

Use Naver Map (네이버 지도) or Kakao Map (카카오맵). Both have English interfaces. The reliable method is to copy the Korean shop name out of this article and paste it in — which is why every name below is written in Korean too.

The same applies to transport. Do not trust a remembered last-train time, and do not trust an English travel blog’s stated last-train minute. Put your accommodation into Naver Map or Kakao Map, set departure to “now,” and read what it says.

Can you order food delivery without a Korean phone number?

Usually not — the major apps verify identity through a Korean mobile carrier.

Ordering fried chicken to your guesthouse at 1 AM is the thing everyone assumes Korea makes easy. It is often closed to visitors. The major delivery apps — 배달의민족 Baemin, 쿠팡이츠 Coupang Eats — run identity verification through a Korean mobile carrier, and an overseas number generally cannot complete it. Restaurants that support pay-on-arrival are sometimes a way around it, but the sign-up wall comes first.

Do not test this at 2 AM. Walking out is faster than fighting a verification screen. Everything below assumes you go to the food.

The night, hour by hour

Hongdae does not stay open as one block. Options disappear one at a time, roughly on the hour. This table is the spine of the article.

Approx. timeWhat closes or opens
20:30Musinsa lockers close
22:00Staffed luggage counters (TLUGGAGE, Jimcarry) close · taxi night surcharge starts at 20%
23:00Owl Buses begin running (23:00–06:00, ₩2,500 by card) · taxi surcharge rises to 40%
The 23:00 hour into the small hoursLast trains on Line 2, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line and the AREX — all different
00:00–02:00The most expensive window to move. Taxi surcharge 40%
02:00–04:00Taxi surcharge drops back to 20%. Last Owl Bus departures fall between roughly 03:10 and 04:10 depending on route
04:00–05:00Pojangmacha and pizza places start shutting. Surcharge ends
Around 05:30First trains. The hangover-soup shift begins

22:00 — the luggage locks before anything else

The first thing to close is not a restaurant and not the subway. It is luggage storage. Staffed counters shut at 22:00; Musinsa lockers at 20:30. (Verified on site 2026-06-29.) Walk out of a soup shop at 23:00 and the counter has been shut for an hour. Full section below.

The 23:00 hour — “last train” is not one number

This article deliberately does not print exact last-train minutes. They differ by day, direction and line, they change, and being wrong leaves someone on the street. Learn the structure instead.

  • Hongik Univ. Station is where Line 2, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line and the Airport Railroad (AREX) meet, and all three have different last trains. Someone heading to Incheon Airport and someone heading to Gangnam do not share a deadline.
  • The last train from your platform is earlier than the line’s closing time. Depending on which terminus the train is going to, the gap can be half an hour or more.
  • If your route involves a transfer, the real deadline is the last moment you can still make that transfer — not the last train out of Hongdae.

There is one correct method. Put your accommodation into Naver Map or Kakao Map, set departure time to now, and it will compute the latest departure that gets you there. The platform display board also shows last-train information. From 23:00 onward, re-check every 30 minutes. → If you missed the last train

00:00–04:00 — Owl Buses and the taxi surcharge

Seoul runs 14 night-only city bus routes, the Owl Buses (올빼미버스). They operate 23:00–06:00 and cost ₩2,500 by transit card (Seoul Metropolitan Government traffic site, as of March 2026). Every route number starts with N, and N26, N62 and N73 are documented as passing Hongik Univ. Station. Routes get revised, so do not memorise numbers — put the destination into the map app, which switches to night routing automatically after the subway closes.

Taxis, on Seoul’s registered fare schedule (as of April 2026):

TimeMid-size taxi base fare (1.6 km)Surcharge
Daytime₩4,800
22:00–23:00 and 02:00–04:00₩5,80020%
23:00–02:00₩6,70040%

Leaving the Seoul city boundary adds another 20%, and stacked with the night surcharge it can reach 60%. In plain terms: 23:00 to 02:00 is the single most expensive time to move around Hongdae. Waiting two more hours drops you a fare tier.

What is actually open in Hongdae after midnight?

Soup shops, pojangmacha and gopchang places, and convenience stores — in that order of reliability. Individual shops close. Categories do not. Learn the pattern first, then the names.

CategoryRoughly how lateWhat it is actually like
Gukbap, haejangguk, gamjatang (soup-and-rice)The category where 24-hour listings are most commonThe default post-drinking meal. Nobody looks twice at a solo diner. Table kiosks are increasingly common, which removes the language problem

Convenience storesThe only genuinely reliable 24 hoursCU, GS25, 7-Eleven. Many branches have a ramyeon cooker
DeliveryVaries by shopFrequently blocked at sign-up without a Korean phone number (above)
Fast food and chainsBranch by branchThe same brand differs between branches. Check that specific branch in the map app, not the brand

Assembling a meal at a convenience store. In branches with a ramyeon cooker (라면조리기), you buy a packet of instant noodles, cook it in the machine, and dip a triangle kimbap (삼각김밥) into the broth. Add a smoked egg, pickled radish, or frozen dumplings. This is the format that became famous at the Han River park stores as “Han River ramyeon” and it is now standard in neighbourhood branches. Total cost lands around ₩4,000–6,000.

Five Korean words that make the night easier

  • 해장 haejang (解酲) — literally dissolving (解) the hangover (酲). It has nothing to do with 장 “intestines,” despite the folk assumption. It explains why the answer is always soup: hot, salty, broth-based food is treated in Korea as the standard hangover remedy, which is precisely why haejangguk (해장국) shops run around the clock.
  • 포장마차 pojangmacha (포차 pocha) — originally an orange-tented street cart. In Hongdae today “pocha” usually means an indoor pojangmacha: the street-stall format moved inside.
  • 야식 yasik — a night meal. Half of Korea’s delivery culture exists to serve it.
  • 2차 / 3차 (icha / samcha) — “round two, round three.” A Korean drinking night moves venues: meat restaurant, then pocha, then noraebang. This progression is why the night gets long — by round three the last train has gone. Photo booths also run late, and slot into the same sequence.
  • 사장님, 계산이요 (sajangnim, gyesan-iyo) — “Owner, the bill please.” Many Korean places do not bring a bill to the table; you go to the counter. There is no tipping.

Nine cross-checked late spots, grouped by what you want at that hour

Only shops corroborated across two or more independently published sources as of September 2026 are listed. Walking times are estimates from map distance. Opening hours, and “24 hours” in particular, are the most volatile information here — check the shop in Naver Map before you walk.

After drinking — haejang

Boseung Hoegwan 보승회관 (Hongdae branch) — Eoulmadang-ro, Mapo-gu Gukbap and boiled-pork gukbap. Listed as 24 hours across Korean restaurant databases. It has ordering kiosks at the tables, which in practice is the single most useful feature here for a visitor with no Korean. Built for solo diners. About 3–6 minutes from Exit 8 or 9 · gukbap band

Donsubaek 돈수백 (Hongdae main branch) — Hongik-ro 6-gil, Mapo-gu Seoul-style pork gukbap. Listed at 129 m from Exit 8, under three minutes on foot, and described as 24 hours with no break time. The menu carries both meal dishes and drinking dishes, so it works either as the place you end up drinking or the place you sober up. About 2–3 minutes from Exit 8 · gukbap band

Mucheong Gamjatang 무청감자탕 (Hongdae branch) — Jandari-ro, Mapo-gu, 2nd floor Pork-bone stew and pork-bone haejangguk with dried radish greens. Listed as 24 hours. It sits opposite Sangsangmadang, so it is a natural walk-out from the club streets, and it is closer still to Sangsu Station. Large room, so a group has a real chance of getting seated at 3 AM. About 10–13 minutes from Exit 8/9; closer from Sangsu Station Exit 1 · gamjatang band

Food that doubles as drinking food

Mapo Gopchang 마포곱창 (Hongdae branch) — Eoulmadang-ro, Mapo-gu, ground floor Grilled beef intestine and daechang. Listed as 24 hours, which makes it close to the only option in Hongdae if what you want at 3 AM is to grill meat. From Exit 8, walk a short way toward the busking street. About 2–4 minutes from Exit 8 · gopchang band

Samgeori Pocha 삼거리포차 — Wausan-ro, Mapo-gu The best-known indoor pojangmacha in Hongdae, listed daily 17:00–05:30 with last order at 05:00. Know what it is before you go: it belongs to the heonting pocha (pick-up bar) genre — loud nineties Korean pop, packed, social. It is not a quiet meal. ID checks are strict, so bring your passport. About 7–10 minutes from Exit 9 · pocha band

Quiet, alone

Pho Mons 포몬스 (Hongdae branch) — Eoulmadang-ro, Mapo-gu Vietnamese pho. Multiple sources note the Hongdae branch is the chain’s 24-hour location. It is the standard alternative when the gukbap shops are full of loud drunk people, and the beef broth does the same hangover job. Inside the Walking Street block. About 3–5 minutes from Exit 8/9 · pho band

Hakata Bunko 하카타분코 — Dokmak-ro 19-gil, Mapo-gu A Hakata tonkotsu ramen shop open since 2004. Sources put closing anywhere between 02:30 and 03:00, so check the last-order time rather than the closing time. Write-ups repeatedly mention a menu item you can only order after 22:00. Counter seating, so eating alone is unremarkable. Nearer Sangsu Station; about 15 minutes from Exit 8/9 · ramen band

Convenience stores and chains

King Kebab 킹케밥 (Hongdae branch) — Wausan-ro 19-gil, Mapo-gu, ground floor Turkish-style kebab, listed as 24 hours, year-round. It sits one block back from the club street with an open frontage, so it functions as walk-away food more than a sit-down stop. About 7–10 minutes from Exit 9 · kebab band

Monster Pizza 몬스터피자 — Wausan-ro, Mapo-gu Pizza by the slice. Opens 17:00 and listed as running to somewhere between 04:30 and 05:00 depending on the source. Its original purpose is a paper plate eaten standing on the street. It comes straight out of the oven, so give it a moment. About 7–10 minutes from Exit 9 · slice band

Convenience stores (CU · GS25 · 7-Eleven) When all nine of the above are full, or one of them has a handwritten “closed today” on the door, this is the answer that cannot be wrong. There is one every few steps along the main streets. Many have a ramyeon cooker, a microwave, hot water and a seating counter. 1–3 minutes from any exit · ₩4,000–6,000

What should you watch out for at 3 AM?

Taxi refusal, cash-only shops, the one-dish-per-person rule, and pocha that will not serve drinks without food.

1. Taxi refusal on short trips. 23:00–02:00 is not only the 40% surcharge window, it is also when drivers pick their fares. Short hops are the hardest to get. Calling through an app such as Kakao T with the destination already entered is more reliable than waving at a main road — and in the back alleys no taxi will come at all, so walk out to a main road first.

2. Carry cash. Some late-night old shops and pocha prefer cash, and foreign-issued cards are sometimes declined depending on the terminal. About ₩50,000 in cash is a sensible amount to have on you at night. Convenience-store ATMs generally accept foreign Visa and Mastercard, but fees vary by issuing bank. → Paying for things in Korea

3. One order per person (1인 1메뉴). Many places require one dish per seated person. It is shop policy, not law, and it is stricter in busy districts. Two people sharing one bowl of soup generally does not fly in Hongdae.

4. At a pocha you cannot order drinks alone. Pocha and bars expect you to order food to hold the table — 안주, dishes eaten with alcohol. Ordering soju and nothing else will not get you seated. The flip side is that this rule is exactly what turns a pocha into a viable late dinner.

Where do you store luggage if you are eating in Hongdae late?

A 24-hour self-service point, chosen in the morning — staffed counters close at 22:00 and you cannot change your mind at midnight.

This is where visitors most often get caught. Staffed luggage counters close at 22:00. Late-night eating starts at 22:00. The two timetables do not overlap at all.

A worked backward count

Check out at 10:00, first train to the airport the next morning, night spent in Hongdae.

  • 10:30 drop the bags → choosing a staffed counter here creates a 22:00 deadline you have not noticed yet
  • 19:00 dinner
  • 21:30 first round of drinks
  • 23:30 second round, at a pocha
  • 02:00 haejangguk
  • 05:30 first train — and you need the suitcase

With a staffed counter, you have to leave the drinks at about 21:45, collect the case, and then drag it around until 05:00. No pocha and no soup shop has floor space for a 26-inch case, and at busy hours you will be turned away at the door.

With 24-hour self-service, you collect at 05:00 and walk straight through the gate. Same day, completely different night.

Compressed into one rule: if there is any chance you will want your bag after 22:00, choose a 24-hour self-service option when you drop it off in the morning. You cannot change your mind at midnight. → Early and late luggage storage · Hongik Univ. Station exit guide

Bottom line

  • After midnight in Hongdae the constraint is transport and luggage, not restaurants.
  • Do not memorise a last-train time. Line 2 and the AREX differ, and so does your platform. Check on the day in Naver Map or Kakao Map.
  • 23:00–02:00 is peak cost. Taxi surcharge 40%. Owl Buses run from 23:00 at ₩2,500.
  • The only guaranteed 24 hours is a convenience store. Everything else can list 24 hours and still be shut tonight.
  • Delivery apps usually block sign-up without a Korean number. Leave them out of the plan.
  • If you intend to eat past 22:00, pick a 24-hour locker in the morning. That is the whole article in one line.

Prices and hours are from publicly listed information as of September 2026. Small businesses in Hongdae change hours and menus often — check Naver Map or the shop’s Instagram before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything open in Hongdae after midnight?

Yes. Hongdae is one of the few Seoul districts with a genuine night-eating economy. Gukbap and haejangguk soup shops commonly list 24-hour hours, and pojangmacha and gopchang places run to 04:00-05:00. The constraint is transport and luggage, not food.

What time is the last train from Hongik Univ. Station?

It varies by line, direction and day, spanning roughly the 23:00 hour into the small hours. Line 2 and the AREX airport line have different last trains, and the last train from your platform is earlier than the line's closing time. Check the departure time in Naver Map or Kakao Map on the day.

Can I order food delivery in Korea without a Korean phone number?

Often not. The major delivery apps run identity verification through a Korean mobile carrier, which blocks sign-up on an overseas number. Some shops that offer pay-on-arrival can be a workaround, but do not build a 2 AM plan around it.

Where do I store luggage if I am eating in Hongdae late at night?

Use a 24-hour self-service option from the start. Staffed counters (TLUGGAGE, Jimcarry) close at 22:00 and Musinsa lockers at 20:30. The 24-hour options are Annyeong at Exit 7, Cocoon at Exits 5 and 7, the Exit 7 lockers, LuggageQ, and the Welcome Center at Exit 5. (Verified on site 2026-06-29.)
