A Beauty Day in Hongdae: Hair, Nails and Skin, In Order

Visitors book beauty appointments in Seoul the way they book café stops. Then a colour appointment eats the whole afternoon, the semi-permanent brows booked on day one are still flaking on day three, and the waxing slot turns out to sit the morning before a jjimjilbang.

This is not a fourth list of salons. It is the order of operations — what goes first, what goes last, and how each appointment collides with your luggage deadline. Prices, shops and booking detail per category live in the three articles underneath:

How long does each treatment take, and what does it cost you afterwards?

Every number in this table is taken directly from those three articles. Nothing here is a new estimate.

What goes early in a trip, and what goes late?

Early: anything with healing, and anything you would want to redo

  • Perms. The 48-hour no-washing rule is the whole reason, and a perm the night before a long flight arrives home with a headrest crease in it.
  • Colour and cuts. If the colour comes out wrong, you want days left to go back.
  • Semi-permanent brows are less an early-in-the-trip item than a not-on-this-trip item. The retouch falls 4 to 8 weeks later, which nothing under two weeks can cover.

Late: anything with no downtime, and anything you want fresh for the flight

  • Nails. Gel is cured under a lamp, so there is no drying time and no reason to do them early. Extensions are the caveat below.
  • Lash extensions. One day of avoiding water, then they last the rest of the trip — but they go after any jjimjilbang or swimming.
  • Waxing. Short, and its 24–48 hour restriction is easiest to absorb at the end.
  • Salon facials, head spas, men’s cuts. No restrictions at all.

Never right before a flight

  • Anything injected or laser-based. Swelling, bruising and redness can take days to settle, and if something goes wrong you are no longer in the country.
  • Bleach. Freshly bleached hair has already lost moisture and cabin air is dry.
  • Perms. Same crease problem as above.
  • Fresh extensions. The first day is when they lever off, and that is exactly the day you are hauling a case.

A note on medical procedures. Anything injected or laser-based is a medical procedure. It should be discussed with a licensed doctor who has examined you in person, and results and risks vary from person to person. This article does not recommend or endorse any of them, makes no claim about how well or how safely any of them work, and is not medical advice.

What conflicts with the rest of your itinerary

  • Waxing or fresh lashes versus a jjimjilbang, sauna or swimming. 24 to 48 hours of no hot water either way. Book the spa first and the treatment after — the reverse order costs you the spa.
  • Semi-permanent brows versus photo days. Days 2 to 10 are the scabbing window.
  • Fresh colour versus a swimming pool. The hair article’s own point stops at “freshly bleached hair is already dry” — so if you have a pool day, ask your designer before you get out of the chair.
  • Fresh nails versus packing. Extensions come off on suitcase handles. Store the bag before the appointment, not after.

Three worked days, each ending in a luggage check

Times are illustrative. What matters is that the last line is always the pickup.

Half a day — one treatment plus shopping

10:00Store the bag (Exit 7 or Exit 5)
10:30One-colour gel — about 1 hour
11:40Olive Young Hongdae Town, then Daiso
13:00Lunch
14:30Collect the bag — comfortable against every deadline

A full day — two treatments

09:30Store the bag
10:00Colour, no bleach — 2 to 3 hours
13:00Lunch
14:00Full art nails — 1.5 to 2.5 hours
16:30Shopping
18:30Collect the bag — clears Musinsa at 20:30 and the staffed counters at 22:00

Swap that colour for bleach plus colour and the day collapses. Three to five hours from a 10:00 start ends between 13:00 and 15:00, and the nails have to go.

Checkout day, evening flight — the backward count

Say a 21:00 departure from Incheon Terminal 1. Count from the flight, not from the appointment.

21:00Departure
18:00At the airport — earlier if you have tax refund receipts, because customs has to see them before you check your bags
16:50Board the AREX all-stop at Hongik Univ. Station — about 55 minutes to Terminal 1
16:30Collect the bag
16:15Appointment must be finished

Which means full art (up to 2.5 hours) has to start by 13:45, a one-colour gel (1 hour) can start as late as 15:00, and bleach plus colour does not fit at all — at the five-hour end of its range you miss the plane.

On a checkout day, use a 24-hour self-service option. The 22:00 close is not really the problem; having no room left to absorb an overrun is.

How do you book all of this?

The per-category detail is in the three articles. The common ground:

  • Naver Booking (네이버 예약) is the default and largely Korean-only. Since 4 June 2026 eligible foreign users can verify with a passport issued outside Korea instead of a Korean mobile number — but that only helps if the shop runs Naver Booking, and many Hongdae shops do not.
  • KakaoTalk channels are the practical route for waxing, lash and nail shops, and Instagram DM is the real booking desk for single-artist studios (1인샵).
  • Foreigner-facing platforms — Klook, KKday, Creatrip, Trazy, WAUG — fix the price in advance and confirm in your language.
  • How far ahead. Published guidance for nails is 3 to 4 days, and 1 to 2 weeks for in-demand artists. Weekend and evening slots go first.
  • Deposits and no-shows. Partial deposits are increasingly common and a 24-hour cancellation rule is becoming standard. Arriving 5 to 10 minutes early is the norm.
  • Bring reference photos. Three to five for hair (front, side, back), two to three for nails, saved as screenshots in your gallery — salon wifi is unreliable.
  • There is no tipping in Korea. The menu price is the final price.

Where do you buy the products rather than book the treatment?

Olive Young Hongdae Town and the seven-floor Daiso Hongdae 2nd store, both near Exit 8.

Where

  • Olive Young Hongdae Town (올리브영 홍대타운). About 991㎡ of sales floor — roughly 300 pyeong, the company’s second largest after Myeongdong Town — over three floors, on the main road running from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 8 towards the Walking Street (걷고싶은거리). Olive Young says it stocks a translation device covering 16 languages. A separate men’s-curation branch also exists in Hongdae.
  • Daiso Hongdae 2nd store (다이소 홍대2호점). A whole seven-floor building on Yanghwa-ro (양화로) near Exit 8. Daiso prices everything at one of six points — ₩500, ₩1,000, ₩1,500, ₩2,000, ₩3,000 and ₩5,000 — and its beauty range grew from roughly 60 brands and 500 products at the end of 2024 to about 170 brands and 1,900 products by April 2026.
  • Road shops. Single-brand road shops have been shrinking for years as buying moved to multi-brand health-and-beauty stores and online. Do not build a Hongdae trip around one brand’s own shop — check that branch on Naver Map first.
  • Olive Young says it gives an immediate extra discount, scaled to the purchase amount, for Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay and WOWPASS. Its big sale (올영세일) runs in March, June, September and December.

The tax refund, carefully

Figures below are Korea Tourism Organization guidance as of September 2026. Confirm at the till — thresholds move.

Rule
WhoNon-Korean citizens who have been in Korea under six months (separate conditions for overseas Koreans)
Minimum₩15,000 or more per receipt, goods new and unopened, departure within three months of purchase
Immediate refund at the tillSingle payment at least ₩15,000 and under ₩1,000,000, and no more than ₩5,000,000 in total across the trip. Physical passport required
Downtown refund boothsReceipt must not exceed ₩6,000,000
Airport refundNo purchase limit, but customs must see the goods before you check your bags

Two things people get wrong. You do not get the full 10% back — the agency takes a fee. And the refund covers goods, not services: a haircut, a gel set and a facial are not refundable, and the separate VAT refund for foreign patients having cosmetic procedures ended on 31 December 2025. → Hongdae skincare and clinics

The 100ml rule, which is how the bag overflows

At Incheon, liquids, sprays and gels must be in containers of 100 ml or less — the container’s stated capacity, not how much is left in it — and all of them together must fit inside one transparent 1-litre resealable bag per person (20.5 × 20.5 cm, or 15 × 25 cm). A 200 ml toner bottle with an inch left in it does not go through.

Checked baggage has no volume limit. So most of an Olive Young haul — toner, ampoules, cleansing oil, sheet masks in liquid — has to be checked, which is exactly how a suitcase that closed on arrival stops closing. → When your beauty haul will not fit

Why do beauty appointments break luggage plans?

A beauty appointment is the single most common reason a traveller’s storage plan fails. A 2 to 3 hour treatment plus a thirty-minute overrun plus a queue pushes you past a staffed counter’s 22:00 close — and Hongdae salons are narrow rooms on the second to eighth floor, with nowhere to put a 28-inch case.

  • Staffed counters (TLUGGAGE, Jimcarry): close 22:00
  • Musinsa Standard lockers: close 20:30
  • 24-hour self-service: Annyeong (Exit 7) · Cocoon (Exits 5 and 7) · the Exit 7 lockers · LuggageQ · Welcome Center (Exit 5)

(checked on site 2026-06-29)

The service duration picks the storage, not the other way round. A men’s cut works anywhere; an evening art appointment, or anything on checkout day, needs 24-hour self-service from the start.

Bottom line

  • Downtime decides your itinerary, not appointment length.
  • Early: perms and colour. Late: nails, lashes, waxing, facials. Right before the flight: nothing.
  • Jjimjilbang first, waxing and lashes after.
  • On the last day, count backwards from the plane. 21:00 flight → 18:00 airport → 16:50 train → 16:30 luggage → 16:15 appointment ends.
  • Immediate tax refund: ₩15,000 to under ₩1,000,000 per payment, ₩5,000,000 total, physical passport. Anything over 100 ml gets checked.

Prices and hours are from publicly listed information as of September 2026. Small businesses in Hongdae change hours and menus often — check Naver Map or the shop’s Instagram before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a hair salon and a nail salon on the same day in Hongdae?

Yes, as long as there is no bleach. Colour without bleach runs 2 to 3 hours and full art runs 1.5 to 2.5 hours, which is a 7 to 8 hour day with lunch in it. Bleach plus colour is 3 to 5 hours and does not leave room for a second appointment.

Can I get a beauty treatment on the day I fly home?

Only if the arithmetic works. The AREX all-stop train runs from Hongik Univ. Station to Incheon Terminal 1 in about 55 minutes. For a 21:00 departure that means at the airport by 18:00, leaving Hongdae by about 16:50, luggage collected by 16:30, and the appointment finished by 16:15. Nothing invasive on a flight day.

What is the minimum spend for a tax refund in Korea?

Per Korea Tourism Organization guidance, ₩15,000 or more per receipt. For an immediate refund at the till the single payment must be at least ₩15,000 and under ₩1,000,000, with a ₩5,000,000 total across the trip, and you need your physical passport. As of September 2026 — confirm at the till.

Can I go to a jjimjilbang after waxing or lash extensions?

No. Waxing rules out sauna, hot baths and swimming for 24 to 48 hours, and lash extensions mean no water on the lashes for 24 hours and no steam or sauna for 24 to 48 hours. Book the jjimjilbang first and the treatment after it.
