Hongdae Hair Salons in English: Perm and Colour Prices

Two things break before you even sit down.

The menu is in Korean, and it is not one word for “perm.” Korean salon menus split perms into 열펌 / 일반펌 / 셋팅펌 / 디지털펌 / 볼륨매직 / 다운펌, each with its own price and its own duration. Walking in and pointing at a photo gets you a price you did not expect.

And Google Maps does not really work in Korea. Walking directions are crippled by export restrictions on Korean map data, and most salons are on the second to eighth floor of a building with no street-level sign. Naver Map or Kakao Map will find the door; Google Maps often will not. Save the Korean name of the salon — you will need it to search.

Here is the menu decoded, what it costs, and how long you will actually be sitting there.

What does “Korean perm” actually mean?

Korean perms split first by whether heat is used. Everything else follows from that.

Menu item (Korean)What it isNotes
일반펌 — cold permRods and chemicals, no heatCheapest, least damaging. Holds 1–3 months
열펌 — heat permUmbrella term for any heated permThicker wave, holds longer, costs and damages more
셋팅펌 — setting permRods heated to roughly 120–180°CStrong, long-lasting curl. Limited rod sizes, so less fine detail. Usually done on longer hair that keeps the rods off the scalp
디지털펌 — digital permTemperature-controlled machine, full S-curl or SS-curlSofter and more natural than a setting perm, better in humidity, more expensive
볼륨매직 / 매직스트레이트Straightening. Volume magic lifts the roots while straightening the lengthsThe frizz fix. Often sold bundled with a setting perm
다운펌 — down permFlattens sides and fringe that stick outAlmost always added to a men’s cut. 30–60 minutes
클리닉 / 트리트먼트Repair treatmentGenuinely worth adding to bleach or perm — usually real advice, not an upsell
탈색 — bleachLifting colour outCharged per round. Lighter target colour means two or three rounds, and you pay for each one
뿌리염색 — root colourRetouching regrowth onlyCheaper than a full colour

Two things foreigners get caught by:

A setting perm is not “the men’s perm.” Men’s services split into setting perm, down perm and cold perm too, and many salons publish separate men’s and women’s price lists.

Some salons will not perm bleached hair. The Days Hair in Hongdae states this openly. If you have bleached, coloured or permed in the last six months, say so when you enquire, not when you arrive.

How much does a haircut or perm cost in Hongdae?

Start here: the price on the menu is a base price. Two variables move the final number.

Variable 1 — the long-hair surcharge (긴머리 추가요금)

Almost every salon prices by length band: jaw / shoulder / chest / waist. One Hongdae salon publishes a design-colour menu at ₩300,000 (bob), ₩350,000 (shoulder), ₩400,000 (chest), ₩450,000 (waist). Length alone moves the price by ₩150,000.

Variable 2 — the designer rank you request (디자이너 지명)

The same service costs different amounts depending on who does it. The ladder runs 원장 (owner/director) · 부원장 · 수석실장 · 실장 (senior stylist) · 디자이너 · 인턴, and requesting a higher rank adds tens of thousands of won. Korean press reported a case where a cut went from ₩25,000 to ₩35,000 simply because the stylist was promoted from 디자이너 to 실장.

Soonsiki in Hongdae grades by years of experience — P (1–2 yrs), S (2–3), D (3–5), M (5–10). If you do not request a specific designer, a flat ₩33,000 applies to whoever is assigned. Not naming a designer is the cheapest option available.

Publicly listed bands, base prices, as of September 2026

ServiceRough band (KRW)Notes
Men’s cut15,000 – 40,000Neighbourhood barbers 12,000–15,000; designer salons from 35,000
Women’s cut25,000 – 110,000The widest rank spread of any service
Men’s cut + down perm40,000 – 55,000Seoul average is roughly 25,000 cut + 20,000 down perm
Cold perm40,000 – 120,000
Setting perm / digital perm100,000 – 200,000+Hair & Joy in Hongdae lists digital perm from 143,000
Volume magic100,000 – 250,000Bundled setting-perm packages around 300,000 are common
Full colour60,000 – 200,000Hongdae salons list colour from 110,000
Root colour40,000 – 60,000
Bleach50,000 – 150,000 per roundTwo rounds means paying twice
Clinic / treatment30,000 – 100,000Often discounted when combined with a chemical service
Head spa50,000 – 150,000Private room adds roughly 10,000

Anything blonde needs two or three bleach rounds, and on long hair crossing ₩500,000 is normal, not a scam. Community posts about a ₩700,000 bill in Hongdae for bleach plus colour plus treatment plus perm show up regularly. That is the arithmetic working as designed.

How many hours does each service take?

For a traveller this matters more than the price. A salon appointment decides the shape of your whole day.

ServiceTimeWhat it costs you
Men’s cut (+ styling)40 min – 1 hrFits between other plans
Men’s cut + down perm1 – 1.5 hrsThe front half of a morning
Women’s cut (wash and blow-dry included)1 – 1.5 hrs
Head spa (with cut)About 1.5 hrs
Colour, no bleach2 – 3 hrsAn entire afternoon
Perm (cold or heat)2 – 4 hrsAn entire afternoon
Bleach + colour3 – 5 hrsA full day
Two-plus bleach rounds + colour + treatment5 – 6 hrs+Do not plan a dinner

Asking for a perm and a colour on the same day will usually be refused. Most stylists recommend at least two weeks between a perm and a colour to limit damage.

How do you book if you do not speak Korean?

The standard reservation route in Korea is NAVER 예약. The interface is effectively Korean-only.

One thing has changed. NAVER introduced Foreign Passport Verification on 4 June 2026. Eligible foreign users can verify with a passport issued outside Korea instead of completing Korean mobile-phone verification. The conditions: original passport, not issued by Korea, not expired, not already used to verify another NAVER ID, and the name and date of birth must match your NAVER account.

That removes an identity barrier. It does not make every salon bookable — the salon still has to run NAVER Booking, and many Hongdae salons do not.

The other routes

  • Instagram DM — the most reliable route in Hongdae. Nearly every designer runs a personal account and takes enquiries there.
  • KakaoTalk channel — add the shop’s channel and message it. Confirmations arrive on Kakao too.
  • The salon’s own form, WhatsApp or email — salons that market to international clients usually publish one of these separately.
  • Travel platforms — English interface and prepayment, but cancellation and refund terms may differ from the salon’s own.

What to put in the message, and what to get back

Send: the service you want, preferred date, preferred time window, a named designer if you have one, whether you need English, 2–3 reference photos, a photo of your hair now, and any bleach, colour or perm in the last six months.

Then make sure the reply actually contains: expected price or price basis, expected duration, whether a deposit is required, and the cancellation rule. “Yes, possible” settles nothing.

Do not rely on the phrase “foreigner-friendly.” Someone in the building speaking English is not the same as an English-speaking designer being assigned to your service, on your date, at your time.

Bring reference photos — this is not optional

Korean salons consult from photos, even when language is not an issue. Bring 3–5 photos showing front, side and back, and save them as screenshots in your phone gallery rather than as Instagram saves. Salon wifi is not always reliable.

No-shows, lateness and deposits

Korean salons take no-shows seriously. More shops now take a partial deposit up front, and a stated 24-hour cancellation rule is becoming standard. Arriving late can mean a shortened service or a same-day cancellation, because the next booking is already in the diary. Arriving 5–10 minutes early is the norm.

There is no tipping

Korean salons do not have a tipping culture. The menu price is the final price. Leave cash and staff will usually try to give it back, assuming you miscounted. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) and cash are standard; domestic apps like KakaoPay need a Korean bank account. → How to pay in Korea

Which Hongdae salons can you actually confirm?

Only salons cross-checked across multiple independent sources and appearing to be currently operating are listed. No phone numbers, street addresses or opening hours here — those change and stale ones send you to a locked door. Check Naver Map or the salon’s Instagram before you go.

Soonsiki Hair (순시키) — Hongik Univ. Station Exit 8, about 1–2 min

The best-known Hongdae salon among international visitors, with several branches (flagship, Romantique, Hanok). Grades designers by years of experience (P/S/D/M) and applies a flat ₩33,000 if you do not request anyone. Publicly states that each branch keeps designers experienced with curly hair — worth confirming for your date. Interpreters are available at set times. The Hanok branch has a private room for scalp treatments. Book via NAVER, Instagram DM or a travel platform.

The Days Hair (Day.S Hair) — Hongik Univ. Station Exit 9, about 5 min

A small salon that has been taking international clients for over ten years and advertises all stylists speaking English. Pricing is split into master and beginner tiers, so say which you want when booking. They do not perm bleached hair. Instagram DM is effectively the main enquiry route.

Hair & Joy — Donggyo-dong, towards Hongik Univ. Station Exit 8

All four stylists speak Korean and English and have completed Toni & Guy and Vidal Sassoon courses in London; two have done L’Oréal’s colourist course. Published prices: cut ₩33,000–110,000 depending on stylist rank, digital perm from ₩143,000, colour from ₩110,000 — among the most transparent rank-based pricing published in the area. A long-established name among foreign residents.

VOG Hair (보그헤어 홍대) — near Hongik Univ. Station Exits 8–9

The differentiator is private rooms. The salon explicitly markets to hijab-wearing clients and to families. Full service list: cut, colour, bleach, perm, scalp and head spa, with English support and translation help. It states that cold perm, digital perm, colour and bleach may carry an on-the-day surcharge.

Juno Hair (준오헤어) — several branches around Hongdae

One of Korea’s largest chains, with multiple branches in this area alone (Hongdae 1st, Hongik Univ. Station, Seogyo Tower, Hongdae Sangsu, Hongdae Yeonnam). That density makes getting a slot easier, and the chain menu makes pricing predictable. The trade-off: English support varies a lot by branch and by designer — ask about the specific branch, not the brand.

OU Hair (오유헤어) — Hapjeong Station Exit 2, about 2 min (roughly 200 m)

Sells in packages — cut plus colour plus treatment as one item — rather than à la carte. Korean- and English-speaking stylists consult. A good location if you want out of the noise of the Hongdae main drag. Bookable through travel platforms.

DAY:MEAN (데이민) — Hapjeong area, about 2 min from the station

A colour-led salon. Bleach, balayage, platinum blonde and grunge perms fill the designers’ Instagram feeds. The head director publicly lists a win on a broadcast hair competition. Worth shortlisting if the goal is a light colour.

Evanstyle (에반스타일) — Hongdae, men only

A men’s-only salon with Hongdae and Gangnam branches, focused on men’s cuts, styling and perms; it lists actors, DJs, musicians and models as clients. English-speaking designers exist, but sources consistently say to call ahead and book one specifically.

Deliberately left out: salons confirmable only through a single Korean blog post or a single reseller pass page (With A Hair, Soul Salon, Nangman Mijangso, AARKIN, Cconte Seogyo) — operating status could not be cross-checked. Lucy Hair has a strong reputation but is in Sinchon, outside this article’s area.

Aftercare, and the flight home

Three things only travellers have to think about.

Do not wash a perm for about 48 hours. The chemical reaction continues for 24–48 hours after you leave the chair, and washing before it settles collapses the curl. Tucking hair behind your ears or tying it tightly can leave a permanent kink for the same reason. A perm the day before a long flight will arrive home with a headrest crease in it. Put perms early in the trip.

Bleached hair suffers on long flights. Cabin air is dry and freshly bleached hair has already lost moisture. When a stylist recommends adding a treatment to a bleach service, that is usually genuine advice rather than an upsell.

Most salon products cannot go in your cabin bag. At Incheon, liquids and gels must be in containers of 100 ml or less — the container size, not how much is left in it — and everything must fit in one transparent 1-litre resealable bag per person. Shampoo, treatment, gel and wax all count. A half-used 500 ml treatment bottle is not allowed through. Checked baggage has no volume limit, so if you plan to buy products at the salon, plan to check a bag.

Where does your suitcase go for those hours?

This is where travellers and residents diverge.

Hongdae salons have nowhere to put a suitcase. Most sit on the second to eighth floor of a narrow commercial building, and the lockers they provide are for a handbag, not a 28-inch case. Meanwhile a colour or perm pins you to a chair for three to five hours.

If your appointment is on checkout day, count backwards from the pickup deadline.

  • Staffed counters (TLUGGAGE, Jimcarry) close at 22:00
  • Musinsa lockers close at 20:30
  • 24-hour self-service: Annyeong (Exit 7) · Cocoon (Exits 5 and 7) · the Exit 7 coin lockers · LuggageQ · Welcome Center (Exit 5)
  • (checked on site 2026-06-29)

Do the arithmetic. A 16:00 bleach-and-colour appointment finishes somewhere between 19:00 and 21:00, and later if you add a treatment. If your bag is behind a staffed counter, you may not get it back that night. If you are booking a late-afternoon chemical service, choose a 24-hour self-service option from the start.

A men’s cut is under an hour, so anywhere works. The service duration picks the storage, not the other way round.

Bottom line

  • The listed price is a base price. Length surcharge and designer rank build the real number.
  • Bleach is charged per round. Lighter colour means more rounds, more money and more hours.
  • Not naming a designer is the cheapest option — a flat ₩33,000 at Soonsiki.
  • Booking route is per-salon. NAVER, Instagram DM or KakaoTalk — use the one that salon actually runs.
  • No tipping. Bring 3–5 reference photos.
  • No washing for 48 hours after a perm. Do not perm the day before you fly.
  • Late-afternoon chemical service plus a 22:00 staffed counter is a bad combination.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a perm take at a Korean hair salon?

Budget 2 to 4 hours for a perm, 2 to 3 hours for colour without bleach, and 3 to 5 hours for bleach plus colour. A men's cut is under an hour. Book a chemical service in the morning, not late afternoon — a 16:00 bleach appointment can run past 21:00.

Do you tip at hair salons in Korea?

No. There is no tipping culture in Korean salons. The menu price is the final price. If you leave cash, staff will usually try to return it, assuming you miscounted. If you want to say thank you, leave a review.

Can I book a Seoul hair salon without a Korean phone number?

Yes. NAVER introduced Foreign Passport Verification on 4 June 2026, so eligible foreign users can verify with a passport issued outside Korea instead of a Korean mobile number. But the salon still has to offer NAVER Booking — many Hongdae salons take enquiries only by Instagram DM or KakaoTalk channel.
