“Hongdae is always packed” is only half true. On Line 2 at Hongik Univ. Station (홍대입구역) alone, the number of people coming and going swings from around 1,000 an hour to about 15,000 an hour depending on the time of day. That gap decides whether you get empty streets for photos or the full Hongdae night.
This guide reads the pattern from public data, not vibes: Seoul Metro’s station rankings, hourly transit-card counts, weekday-vs-weekend reports, and Seoul’s real-time city data. It covers the usual rhythm. If you only need to know whether it is busy right now, skip to the last how-to section near the end.
The short version
- Hongik Univ. Station is the second-busiest station on Seoul Subway Lines 1–8 — 150,369 riders a day on average in 2024.
- Seoul’s subway is busiest at 18:00–19:00 (Seoul Metro, 2024). Seoul city names gate crowding in the middle of the concourse and the crush at Exit 9 as this station’s pinch points.
- Seoul’s real-time crowd estimate leaves out foreigners staying 90 days or less, so it can look calmer than the street really is.

How busy is Hongik Univ. Station, really?
It is the second-busiest subway station in Seoul. In Seoul Metro’s 2024 ridership statistics for Lines 1–8, an average of 150,369 people a day got on or off at Hongik Univ. Station — behind only Jamsil, and ahead of Gangnam (149,757). Seoul city’s December 2025 release ranked October 2025 the same way: Jamsil, Hongik Univ., Gangnam, then Seoul Station.
| Rank | Station | 2024 daily average | 2025 daily average (reported) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jamsil (Line 2) | 156,177 | 157,600 |
| 2 | Hongik Univ. | 150,369 | 153,298 |
| 3 | Gangnam | 149,757 | 152,232 |
The 2024 figures are Seoul Metro statistics as published by the Seoul city Media Hub. The 2025 figures come from March 2026 reports in Hankyung and Herald Economy. For the wider ranking, see Seoul subway crowding ranking.
And the real number is higher. These statistics only count Seoul Metro’s lines — at Hongik Univ. Station, that means Line 2 only. The Airport Railroad (AREX) and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line stop at the same station but are run by other operators, so their passengers are not in these counts.
Part of the crush is the layout. In December 2025, Seoul city said arriving passengers bunch up at the gates in the middle of the concourse, tangling the flow, and that people pile onto Exit 9. The plan is to add gates and open a new entrance between Exits 8 and 9 by 2029. Until then, at evening peak, pick the exit closest to where you are actually going instead of defaulting to Exit 9 — the Hongik Univ. Station exit guide lays them out. Searching “홍대입구역” in Naver Map shows every exit on the map.
What time is Hongdae busiest?
Around 18:00–19:00. Seoul Metro’s 2024 statistics show the whole Lines 1–8 network peaks at 18:00–19:00, and Hongik Univ. Station’s own hourly card data has the same shape: people getting off (that is, arriving in Hongdae) hit their daily high at 18:00–19:00, and people getting on to leave surge again between 21:00 and 23:00.
The table below is aggregated from Seoul public data (OA-12252), May 2025, via a third-party public copy. The original dataset is Seoul Open Data Plaza’s hourly boardings and alightings by line and station (서울시 지하철 호선별 역별 시간대별 승하차 인원 정보). A CSV copy of that dataset is published on GitHub; the Line 2 Hongik Univ. monthly totals were read from that copy and divided by 31 to get a daily average. The values were not cross-checked directly against the original file on the official portal, so read the table for its shape, not as exact counts. It mixes weekdays, weekends and holidays, and leaves out 04:00–05:00 and 01:00–02:00, when numbers are tiny.

Three phases:
- Daytime (09:00–16:00): 2,000–3,000 more people arrive than leave every hour. Hongdae is filling up.
- Early evening (17:00–19:00): arrivals and departures both hit their daily highs at once. This is when the station itself is most packed — about 15,000 people pass through in the 18:00 hour alone.
- Night (20:00–23:00): arrivals drop off sharply, but departures stay at 6,000–7,000 an hour. Everyone who came in during the day is now heading out.
Arrivals minus departures: on Line 2, more people come in than leave from 08:00 until 19:00. From 19:00, departures overtake arrivals, and between 21:00 and 23:00 about 4,000 more people an hour leave than arrive. By the subway numbers, Hongdae is at its fullest around 19:00.
This is Line 2 only — AREX, the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, buses and walkers are missing. Still, the shape (a peak around 19:00, emptying out after 21:00) lines up with Seoul Metro’s 2024 finding that the whole subway is busiest at 18:00–19:00.
When is Hongdae quietest for photos?
In the morning — ideally before 11:00. In the Line 2 table above, hourly traffic stays in the 7,000s or lower only from the first train until noon. After noon it climbs every single hour until 18:00–19:00. The 10:00 hour carries less than half the traffic of the 18:00 hour.
- 10:00–11:00 is the morning dip. It is actually quieter than 09:00–10:00 (7,132 → 6,264).
- After noon, it only goes up. From 13:00 it is 9,500+ an hour. If photos are the point, wrap up before lunch.
- Check just before you leave. Seoul real-time city data shows a 12-hour forecast for Hongdae Tourist Zone. Pick the slot it forecasts as least crowded.
One honest caveat: these are station counts, not street counts. Arrivals at 09:00–10:00 include people commuting to work or school around Hongdae, and they do not hang around on the street. Station traffic and street crowds are related, not identical.
Is Hongdae busier on weekends?
Yes — the opposite of Seoul as a whole. Across the network, Friday is the busiest day and Sunday the quietest (Seoul Metro, 2024). A Seoul Metro analysis reported by Herald Economy in May 2026 found the evening commute (17:00–19:00) peaks on Friday, at about 2.03 million riders, while at lunchtime (12:00–14:00) Saturday, at about 1.09 million, beats the weekdays. Friday evenings stack commuting on top of going out; Saturdays fill up from midday.
Hongdae does not follow the citywide script. According to a Seoul Metro analysis reported by Seoul Shinmun in July 2026, Hongik Univ. Station averaged 163,681 riders a day on weekends in the first half of 2026, versus 150,586 on weekdays — 13,095 more (+8.7%), the biggest weekend gain of any station analyzed. Segye Ilbo reported that Seoul Metro put this down to culture on the street: busking on Red Road (레드로드), flea markets and pop-up stores.

| Riders per day | |
|---|---|
| Weekday | 150,586 |
| Weekend | 163,681 |
| Difference | +13,095 (+8.7%) |

What is Hongdae like around the last train?
People keep streaming out right up to it. In the hourly table, Line 2 boardings at Hongik Univ. hold at about 6,700 an hour between 22:00 and 23:00, then drop to 3,477 in the 23:00 hour and 435 after midnight. After 23:00, the number of people leaving by subway roughly halves.
Late-night numbers at Hongik Univ. Station
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Boardings 22:00–23:00 (Line 2) | 6,712 a day | May 2025, all-day-of-week average |
| Boardings 23:00–24:00 (Line 2) | 3,477 a day | May 2025, all-day-of-week average |
| Boardings 00:00–01:00 (Line 2) | 435 a day | May 2025, all-day-of-week average |
| Weekday boardings after midnight | 590 (830 in 2019) | 2025, Segye Ilbo report of Seoul Metro analysis |
According to a Seoul Metro analysis reported by Segye Ilbo in June 2026, Hongik Univ. was second only to Gangnam for average weekday boardings after midnight. That figure fell from 830 in 2019 to 590 in 2025; across Lines 1–8, late-night boardings dropped about 24% over the same period. Friday- and Saturday-only late-night figures are not in any public source found.
- 21:00–23:00 is the station’s second rush. Boardings at 21:00–22:00 (7,037) almost match 18:00–19:00 (7,068). Head to the station then and expect a queue at the gates.
- If Exit 9 is jammed, use another exit. Seoul city itself names the Exit 9 crush as an official cause of congestion.
- Each line has its own last train. Line 2 (Seoul Metro), AREX and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line (Korail) all stop here, and they are run by different operators. Last-train times also change by day and direction, so check the operator’s official timetable or a map app on the day.

When should you pick up your luggage on a busy day?
Before the 21:00–23:00 outflow — or reserve, or use 24-hour storage so the rush stops mattering. The hours the station is jammed are the hours everyone else is dropping off and collecting bags too. The listings show it: TLUGGAGE, the largest operation around the station, often has lines to drop off and pick up on weekends and in peak season; Cocoon is small and can run out of lockers in peak season; the Airport Railroad lockers have only around 20 suitcase-sized units.
Storage around Hongik Univ. Station, by closing time. (On-site check: 2026-06-29)
| Type | Examples | Pickup deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Staffed counters | TLUGGAGE, Jimcarry (AREX concourse) | 22:00 |
| Staffed counter, reservations | KPLANZ (directly connected to Exit 3) | Opens 10:00; stays open later for reservations or bags still stored, until around midnight if needed |
| Lockers | Yellow (underground link to Exit 9) | 23:00 |
| In-station lockers | AREX lockers, TLUGGAGE lockers #1 and #2 | 24:00 (station hours) |
| Musinsa lockers | Inside the Musinsa store | 20:30 |
| 24-hour self-service | Annyeong (Exit 7), Cocoon (Exits 5 and 7), Exit 7 coin lockers, LuggageQ, Welcome Center (Exit 5) | 24 hours |
- Count back from the deadline. A 22:00 counter means leaving dinner to fetch your bag just as the 21:00–23:00 rush peaks. If your evening runs late, start with 24-hour self-service.
- In peak season, reserve where you can. A reservation secures your spot instead of gambling on a free locker.
- Jimcarry only takes drop-offs until 15:00. Pickup runs to closing, but you cannot arrive with bags in the evening.
- Yellow is on the Exit 9 side. It connects underground, but that is the exit the city flags for crowding — give yourself a few extra minutes at 18:00–19:00.

Is Hongdae quieter when it rains?
Public data cannot answer that. Every public figure in this guide is an all-weather average, and no Hongdae data split out for rainy days turned up. On a wet day, the 12-hour forecast on Seoul real-time city data and a live street view beat any average. For the day itself, see the Seoul rainy-day plan.
What about Halloween and Christmas Eve?
The usual pattern goes out the window. Seoul Shinmun reported in December 2023 that Mapo-gu (마포구), after analyzing Seoul’s real-time population data, expected up to 80,000–90,000 people on Hongdae’s Red Road between 17:00 and 19:00 on Christmas Eve. On days like that, follow same-day real-time data and guidance from the district office and police, not hourly averages.
Hongdae’s own Halloween plan is in Hongdae Halloween 2026. For what to do in a dense crowd, read the Itaewon Halloween 2026 crowd-safety guide.
How can you check whether Hongdae is crowded right now?
Seoul real-time city data for the whole neighborhood, plus a live camera for the street. Seoul real-time city data (서울 실시간 도시데이터) opens as a map at data.seoul.go.kr/SeoulRtd — pick Hongdae Tourist Zone (홍대 관광특구) from the list of places. For an actual look outside, this site’s live-cam page gives you a real-time view. A step-by-step on reading these screens is in how crowded is Seoul right now.

| Roads and parking | Traffic flow, parking lots | Real time |
| Weather and environment | Temperature, air quality | Every 10 minutes |
| Events | Nearby cultural events | Daily |
- The population is an estimate. It is built from mobile-carrier base-station signals, aggregated every 5 minutes and scaled up to a total — not a headcount.
- Short-stay foreigners are left out. Foreigners staying 90 days or less are excluded from the estimate. When tourists are out in numbers, “Normal” can feel a lot busier on the ground.
- Read the forecast too. If it says “Normal” now but the 12-hour forecast shows “Crowded” this evening, plan around that slot.
Where do these numbers come from?
Three kinds of public data, each counting something different.
| Data | What it counts | Time unit | Used here for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subway hourly boardings by line and station (Seoul city) | Transit-card taps | 1 hour, monthly totals | Hourly table (May 2025, Line 2, aggregated from a third-party public copy) |
| Daily hourly boardings by station (Seoul Metro) | Transit-card taps | 1 hour, by date | Not aggregated here (weekday/weekend figures come from news reports) |
| Seoul real-time city data | Population estimated from mobile signals | 5 minutes | Checking crowds live |
Bottom line
- Hongik Univ. Station is Seoul’s No. 2 station, and its counts only include Line 2 — the real crowd is bigger.
- 18:00–19:00 is peak; Hongdae is fullest around 19:00 and empties from 21:00.
- For quiet streets and photos, go before 11:00.
- Unlike the rest of Seoul, Hongdae gets busier on weekends (+8.7%).
- 21:00–23:00 is the second rush at the gates — collect bags before it, or use 24-hour storage.
- Check Hongdae Tourist Zone on Seoul real-time city data before you go, remembering it leaves out short-stay visitors.
