The last day of a trip has an awkward shape: checkout is at 11 or 12, but your flight leaves in the evening. Dragging a suitcase through Hongdae’s crowds is no way to spend those final hours. The good news — Hongik University Station sits directly on the Airport Railroad (AREX), so the drop-bag, play, ride-to-airport routine works better here than almost anywhere in Seoul. Here’s the exact plan, with times.
- AREX all-stop train: Hongdae → Terminal 1 in about 55 minutes, ~₩4,750.
- The Express train skips Hongdae — it departs from Seoul Station only.
- Store bags at the station: lockers from ₩2,000 / 4 hrs, staffed counters for big cases.
- Evening flight? Collect your bag about 4 hours before departure.
The last-day plan
- Check out (11:00–12:00) and head to Hongik University Station with your bags.
- Store everything at a locker or staffed counter (options below) — five minutes, done.
- Enjoy Hongdae hands-free: lunch, shopping, a last cafe, souvenirs you no longer have to carry around.
- Collect your bags with time to spare, walk to Exits 3–4, and ride the escalator down to the AREX concourse.
- Board the all-stop train straight to Terminal 1 or 2. No transfer.
Getting to Incheon: what the train actually costs and takes
From Hongik University Station, take the AREX all-stop train — the blue commuter-style one. It runs to Terminal 1 in about 55 minutes and Terminal 2 in roughly an hour, for around ₩4,750 with a transit card. Trains come every 10 minutes or so through the day.
One thing trips people up: the orange AREX Express does not stop at Hongdae. It runs nonstop from Seoul Station only. From Hongdae, the all-stop train is the direct option — and since the Express costs about ₩13,000, you’re not missing much unless you’re starting from Seoul Station anyway.
Work backwards from your flight
For international departures, plan to be at the airport 3 hours before your flight. Add the train ride and a pick-up buffer, and the math looks like this:
| Your flight | At the airport by | Board AREX at Hongdae | Pick up your bag by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18:00 | 15:00 | 13:50 | 13:30 |
| 20:00 | 17:00 | 15:50 | 15:30 |
| 22:00 | 19:00 | 17:50 | 17:30 |
That’s a full afternoon in Hongdae even with an early-evening flight — as long as your bag is somewhere you can grab it fast.
Where to store, by departure time
Any daytime flight: the in-station lockers on the AREX concourse (06:00–24:00) are the shortest possible walk to the platform — small bags ₩2,000, large ₩4,000 per 4 hours. Two more locker banks sit inside the Line 2 station: TLUGGAGE Lockers #1 and #2.
Oversized or lots of bags: skip the locker roulette and use a staffed counter. Jimcarry (09:00–22:00) is connected to the AREX concourse itself; TLUGGAGE (09:00–22:00) and Kplanz are steps away. Kplanz opens at 10:00 and — usefully for this exact scenario — stays open as late as midnight while guests still have bags stored, takes advance bookings, and posts a 10% coupon on its listing page. For a family heading to a red-eye, that combination is hard to beat.
Very late pick-up: the three 24-hour locker spots — Cocoon, Welcome Center, and Annyeong — never close, so a midnight collection is no problem. Note that Musinsa closes at 20:30 and Yellow at 23:00 — fine for most flights, tight for the last ones.
Three small mistakes to avoid
- Don’t cut the pick-up close. Whatever your plan says, add 15 minutes. A locker bank two exits away takes longer to reach through Sunday crowds than you think.
- Check the closing time when you drop off, not when you return. Staffed counters keep set hours; if your flight is after 22:00, choose a 24-hour spot or Kplanz’s flexible closing.
- Don’t wait for an Express at Hongdae. It isn’t coming. Board the all-stop train on the AREX platform — it goes to both terminals.
