Arriving at 5 AM, Check-In at 3 PM — How to Survive 10 Hours in Hongdae

Arriving at 5 AM, Check-In at 3 PM

The fate of every budget-airline red-eye arrival. You land, clear immigration, and then — your accommodation won’t let you in until 3 PM. The whole problem comes down to one thing: where and when you put your bag down. Once your hands are free, those 10 hours flip from a slog into a bonus half-day.

Rule one: store in Hongdae, not at the airport

Airport storage exists, but for an early-morning arrival it almost never makes sense.

If your accommodation is in Hongdae or Mapo-gu, the move is simple: take your bag on the train to Hongik Univ. Station first, then store it there. The AREX line runs direct — no transfers with luggage.

Early-morning arrival timeline

First and last train times change. AREX schedules differ between weekdays and weekends, and they get revised. Check arex.or.kr or Naver Map / KakaoMap for the current day’s times. The timeline below is a rough framework to plan around.

TimeWhat to do
05:00Land at Incheon, clear immigration
05:40Collect baggage, exit arrivals
06:00Board AREX All-stop train (Express skips Hongdae — do not take it)
07:00Arrive at Hongik Univ. Station
07:10Store your bags — this time slot has the emptiest lockers of the day
07:30Breakfast / 24-hour café
09:00Walk Hongdae and Yeonnam — shops are still closed, streets are quiet
12:00Lunch
14:30Retrieve bags
15:00Check in

Two points to lock in:

  1. The Express train does not stop at Hongik Univ. Station. It goes Incheon Airport → Seoul Station with zero stops. To reach Hongdae, take the All-stop train. It costs way less too.
  2. 7–10 AM is prime locker time. The only upside of a dawn arrival — lockers are actually available.

Late-night departure timeline

The reverse situation: a night flight with a whole day to kill after checkout.

TimeWhat to do
11:00Check out, store bags at Hongik Univ. Station
11:30–18:00Free time
18:30Dinner
20:00Pick up bags — this is the trap
20:30Board AREX
21:30Arrive at Incheon Airport

The trap with late departures is pickup time.

  • Staffed counters close in the evening. Check the closing time before you drop off.
  • Self-service lockers follow station hours, so they stay open later than staffed spots.
  • Miss the last AREX train and you’re looking at a late-night airport bus or a taxi (tens of thousands of won).

Two things you must check:

  1. Jimcarry stops accepting drop-offs at 3 PM. Pickup runs until 10 PM, but if you arrive late afternoon and try to drop off, they’ll turn you away.
  2. KPLANZ closing time is flexible. If you’ve made a reservation or have bags still in their care, they’ll often stay open until around midnight. If you need a late pickup, tell them when you drop off.

What to do in Hongdae at odd hours (bag-free)

Once the bag is off your hands, here are the options.

SpotVibeBags
24-hour caféThe safe default. Outlets, Wi-FiStore your suitcase first — tables are small
Jjimjilbang (찜질방)Shower, lie down, sleepInside lockers are for personal items only — suitcase goes to separate storage
24-hour restaurantsA few places serve until 3–5 AMSeats are tight; no room for a suitcase
Coin noraebang, PC bangKill timeNowhere to put a bag
AREX station concourseWaiting for first trainLimited seating

Pattern? The suitcase is the bottleneck everywhere. That’s why storage comes first.

Mistakes people make

1. Killing 4 hours on an airport bench waiting for the first train. Four hours on an airport chair versus four hours in a Hongdae 24-hour café. The train ride is one hour. Just get on it.

2. Buying an Express ticket and being unable to get off at Hongdae. Express = nonstop to Seoul Station. Hongdae-bound = All-stop.

3. Dropping bags at a staffed counter and coming back after it closed. This one really hurts. If you plan a nighttime pickup, confirm the closing time when you drop off.

4. Assuming the jjimjilbang locker fits your suitcase. Those lockers are for clothes and small bags. Suitcases go to a separate front-desk storage — or get turned away entirely.

Bottom line

  • Early arrival → store in Hongdae, not the airport. 7–10 AM is locker prime time.
  • Late departure → check pickup deadlines before you drop off. If it’s going to be late, go self-service.
  • The Express train skips Hongdae. Take the All-stop.
  • Ditch the bag first. Early-morning Hongdae is actually the least crowded you’ll ever see it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there 24-hour luggage storage near Hongdae?

Yes. Several self-service locker spots around the station operate 24 hours. Staffed counters close in the evening, so if you need to pick up late at night, pick a self-service option.

I arrive at Incheon before dawn. Can I go straight to Hongdae?

If the first AREX train hasn't left yet, you wait at the airport or take a late-night airport bus. Once trains start running, the All-stop line gets you to Hongik Univ. Station in about an hour with no transfers.

Can I store my bag and sleep somewhere in Hongdae?

Jjimjilbang (Korean saunas) and 24-hour cafés are the go-to options. Store your suitcase at a locker or counter first — jjimjilbang lockers are built for small personal items, not luggage.
