Day Trips From Hongdae: Luggage Stays, You Don’t Have To
The short answer. One rule for day trips: the suitcase stays in Seoul. And one rule for storage: what time are you getting back? If there’s any chance it’s past 10pm, go with a 24-hour self-service locker.
Why You Shouldn’t Bring Luggage on a Day Trip
- Express buses have tiny or non-existent luggage compartments. A full bus means your suitcase sits in the aisle or on your lap.
- Theme park and tourist site lockers are small and limited. “I’ll just store it there” is a gamble you don’t want to lose.
- Day trips mean 3+ hours of transit round-trip. Add a suitcase and those 3 hours become physical labor.

Destination Breakdown
Everland — The Most Common Day Trip
Getting to Everland from Seoul deserves its own guide. From Hongdae specifically:
- No direct route. You’ll go Airport Railroad / Line 2 → transfer point → express bus or subway + Yongin Everline. One-way: 90 minutes to 2 hours.
- If you stay for the night parade, you’ll be back in Seoul around 10–11pm. In that case: 24-hour locker, no question.
- You will buy merch and it will add to your load. Go with one backpack. Nothing more.
Suwon Hwaseong — Half a Day Is Plenty
Suwon’s fortress walls and old city streets make for one of the best half-day trips from Seoul. The fortress walk is entirely on foot — this is a trip where traveling light pays for itself with every step. Hongdae to Suwon is doable by subway, but an express bus or ITX train may be faster depending on the time of day. The fortress path, the temporary palace, and the market food at the end — it’s a tight, satisfying loop.
Incheon Open Port & Chinatown — Squeeze It In on Airport Day
Accessible from Hongdae via the Airport Railroad and Gyeongui-Jungang Line. The Incheon Station area is compact and walkable. Clever move: store your bags at Hongik Univ. Station early morning, explore Incheon, come back to Hongdae for your luggage, then head to the airport. Or if Incheon is on the way to the airport anyway, reverse-engineer your luggage pickup time from your flight.
Other Nearby Cities
Goyang, Seongnam, Bucheon — these Gyeonggi-do cities hug Seoul and some are day-trip material while others aren’t worth the transit. Know which is which before you commit.
Return Time vs Storage Type
| Back in Hongdae By | Storage Choice |
|---|---|
| Before 9pm | Staffed or self-service — both work |
| 9pm–10pm | Staffed is closing soon — confirm pickup deadline |
| After 10pm | 24-hour self-service locker only |
| Next morning | Self-service locker (multi-day rate) or your accommodation |
Plan your pickup time for the worst case, not the best case. Bus delays, exit crowds, waiting for the last shuttle — all of it adds up. Assume you’ll be an hour later than you think.
Bottom Line
- Day trips: one daypack. Suitcase stays in Hongdae.
- Any chance you’re back after 10pm? Self-service locker.
- Everland is a 3–4 hour transit commitment — know your bus route before you go.
- Doing a day trip on departure day? Work backwards from your luggage pickup time.
